Watches are making a big comeback as a fashion accessory. “Considering how casual most people dress on a day-to-day basis, a glamorous watch is one of the few accessories that can be at once sporty, luxurious and utilitarian,” designer Michael Kors told the New York Times in 2011.
In the intervening four years, women’s wear designers have caught up to what the menswear crowd knew then, the wristwatch is apparently here to stay. The NY Times, LA Times, Esquire, and even the Huffington Post have all reported the trend in the last few years. The high-end men’s watch aficionados are seeking out vintage Rolexes, and even pocket watches, for which we can thank the return of the slim-cut vest. It was only a matter of time before women embraced the trend.
Some credit the “new normal” post-Great Recession—that a growing economy has provided an upwardly mobile hipster chic class the opportunity to purchase once outlandishly expensive timepieces for a fraction of their original value. Others point to the popularity of the Steampunk movement and its fascination with all things clockwork and gear-like. We think it’s likely a combination of factors, not the least of which being the quite true adage that “everything old is new again.”
With the holiday season upon us, what better way to spend some of your jewelry-making time than to create one-of-a-kind, statement watches for the ladies in your life? Watches have become so much more than utilitarian clocks to wear, they’re fashion, high fashion, and can be tailored to any manner of dress, day or evening.
If you’ve got a young girl in your life, try custom-designing her first watch using our alphabet charm beads and smooth cabochons for a fun and whimsical gift. Tweens and teens would love pieces tailored to their interests, from their favorite colors, to school colors, to their favorite pass-times (Steampunk, anyone?).
For the grown-up ladies, how about a statement watch done especially with cocktail hour or formal wear in mind? Crystal beads, jet, onyx and the like can create a stunning cuff bracelet that just happens to be a wonderful watch, too!
Enjoy designing, and may time fly!
